Fulci - Opening The Hell Gates
The first album of Italian Fulci (name of an Italian terror film director Lucio Fulci). Originally "Opening The Hell Gates" was released in 2015 by Despise The Sun Records and CBC Records. So finally after those years it is time to review it.
The style I hear is death/gore/slam and some brutal death. In other words, perfect soundtrack for a zombie movie! Of course the artwork also in that line with a comic touch.
The first track 'Zombi Slam Squad' is a good intro with some melodic air. 'Premature Sepoltura' starts with power with an aggressive riff, plating a good death metal, with some slam parts and at the end some samples of film voices and slow riffs. 'Among The Walking Dead' starts with film sounds of whining, and the riff is very similar to the previous track, with some variations. After this, an old Cannibal Corpse style part. 'Deranged Minds' with guest vocals of Enrico Giannone (Buffalo Grillz, Undertakers), has a fast start, blast beats, some chunky parts and the funky bass part in the end, strange. 'Feeding The Undead', crushing beginning with some faster part of blast beat later, also a film sample with good melodic part. 'Gore Life' in the same line of all album.
Title track 'Opening The Hell Gates' combines slow riffing with a voice talking. Good work of bass drums in the whole album (drumming in general, slamparts and fast parts) and in the end voices of a terror movie. Guest guitars on this song are from Marco Caracas (Face Your Enemy).
The 4 bonus tracks are from 2014 starting with 'Incubus In The Surgery Room', a brutal death metal track in the vein of Aborted, with some slam, and in a different vein to the album. 'City Of The Living Dead' (also comes from the cassette EP) some different but also slamming death metal. After these there are 2 live tracks, 'Among The Walking Dead' and 'City Of The Living Dead' with not too much quality but enough to listen to them playing live. The album ends with “Inferno” an industrial outro, some experimentation and of course outstanding from slam death metal.
I think the production is good, a little linear in some parts, well played, but maybe not enough to break, maybe they can make more and I hope to hear more from them in 2019.[embed]
