Enemy Soil - Smashes The State Live (DVD)
Enemy Soil is or was actually, a grindcore band from the US formed by guitarist/vocalist Richard Johnson. Nowadays he is playing in Drugs Of Faith but was also involved in Agoraphobic Nosebleed. There were several line up changes in the band and the members later on played in Pig Destroyer, Exploding Meth Lab or Self Inflicted. Enemy Soil was active in the beginning of the 90s and start releasing material from 1993 till 1998 in tape, vinyl and CD format. Mostly split releases with other obscure grindcore bands. The band was disbanned but they did a reunion show in 2001 and in 2008 a discography CD was released on Bones Brigade.
And now in 2009 a DVD is released on the Polish label Selfmadegod Records and this disc covers footage from several live gigs from '96, '97 and '98. But also interesting the reunion show they did in 2001.
But let start with the live shows. The shows are not in fancy venues but at in class rooms at some College, cellars or living rooms. A handful of people watching, shaking heads, drinking, jumping and some are pushing others. At one of those gigs in Maryland fans are taking over the mic and start screaming the lyrics when vocalist JR Hayes is somewhere in the crowd. Fukkin great!
When you see those old live performances it is controlled chaos and "one of the boys" mentality. A mentality of playing music just for fun and the love for the music. Just between the audience and have a good time. Songs are short with insane fast drumming (they started with a drummachine), screaming on the top of their capabilities and the guitarist who is throwing sawing riffs through his speakers. It is totally fucked up, rage like a bitter maniac and then they come up with some mosh parts.
Looking at their reunion show you see that they still release the aggression of bitterness in tight package of noisy grindcore. Blasts with the mosh parts at a high speed.
This DVD is for all those who are into grindcore and want to meet the old bands who all started this pure form of grindcore. So don't expect fancy stuff but analog camcorder filmed shows but all digitally edited. Highly enjoyable for the hour you are watching this DVD.
