Echelon - The Brimstone Aggrandizement
From the start, this sounds of a familiar tone and vocal. Well, it should be, two of the industries greatest talents combine with Echelon’s second album. Namely, Rogga Johansson (Paganizer/Ribspreader and many many others) on guitars and Dave Ingram on vocals (Hail Of Bullets, ex-Bolt Thrower, ex-Benediction). Also joining them are Johan Berglund on bass (Ribspreader, The Grotesquery), Kjetil Lynghaug on lead guitar (Johansson & Speckmann, Paganizer) and Travis Ruvo (Akatharta, Cropsy Maniac) on drums.
This is exactly what I have come to expect, intense old school death metal with typical “Rogga-style” melodic guitar riffs overlaying a top notch delivery. The tracks are surprisingly memorable too, a mark of good arrangements. I’ll draw particular attention to ‘Lex Talionis’ the more aggressive ‘Of Warlocks And Wolves’ and the title track. There’s a theme of horror and monsters throughout, with the closing track ‘Monsters In The Gene Pool/Sonic Vortex’ taking in some famous sound byes from the movies. Of course, such a release wouldn’t be the same without hailing Satan like that depicted on ‘The Feared Religion’.
If you are familiar with the other bands these musicians are involved in, you’ll know what to expect. All is of terrifyingly good quality, and those guitar riffs keep you entertained. As for the vocals, it’s another flawless performance, clearly audible and possessing much passion. Echelon should be a no brainer for death metal fans, without overdriving the sound, many melodic parts are added to gain greater depth to this music. A great release indeed.
