Digest! - Hard To Digest

Digest! are a relatively unknown group from Germany that provide punk crusted death metal that is rather catchy and grim without sound too old school fuzzy. Using twisted lyrics and imagery one could imagine if a group like Six Feet Under decided to go punk or fully embrace their rock side of their death n’ roll style, that’s exactly what one would get with this group’s debut “Hard to Digest.” Tracks like ‘Die with a Tube in the Head’ and ‘Infested with Greed’ may come off a bit as Digest! trying too hard to enmulate Cannibal Corpse or SFU, but the style is oddly quite a blend of so many different genres that it is exciting. Right from the opening echoing riff of ‘Die…’ one can hear the mix of death metal, punk, and even what seems like melo death mixed in together. The vocals are a bit one sided in their bellow, but they mesh very well with the music and overall the pace is very accessible.

Other tracks like ‘Digest!’ opt for more straightforward death metal but add more variation to the vocals while ‘Swollen…’ injects more of the punk side back in. ‘Infested with Greed’ slams listeners with a bit more pace- especially in the drumming department- but there are some strong melodies that aren’t seen on the other tracks and push out the stereotype that Digest! are a bit too riff heavy with the chugging. The only downside is this is a very short listen, but for those who really enjoy bands like Six Feet Under, Torture Killer, or even Vader will really find this enjoyable. True, “Hard To Digest” tries to throw listeners with everything imaginable so they choke on it, but at the same time they present a formula that pays homage to some of the greats while giving listeners something a little new to listen to.
