Devangelic - Ersetu
Third album for the Italians Devangelic, brutal death metal band from Rome, Italy. After their debut "Resurrection Denied" released in 2014 and the following (and much more mature) "Phlegethon" in 2017 comes now (official release May 15) this "Ersetu" under the increasingly active and enterprising Willowtip Records. Also the label for which the guitarist Mario already collaborates. Devangelic have improved a lot in recent years, also strong of the many live performances that the four guys have completed during their career. The songs had already become more complex and reasoned starting from the previous "Phlegethon". The songwriting that has improved constantly leading them to compete with much more internationally renowned acts.
I was looking forward to this new work to see where these Devangelic would go. "Ersetu", first of all, is a concept release based on the Annunaki's myth, the theory of creation through the alien DNA. Always taken care of in detail also the artwork, this time entrusted to Nick Keller, already known for working with Disentomb and The Black Dahlia Murder.
"Ersetu" opens the dance with 'Swarm Of Serpent', a song that starts immediately in a direct way and that puts the basis on what the listener will have to expect during the course of the album. Mighty rhythms and heavy guitar riffs accompany Paolo's voice with the intention of taking you back to the days of ancient Egypt. The following 'Upon The Wrath Of Divinities' is an absolute punch in your face. Song is fast and heavy with a compositional freshness that has been missing for a long time. The guys really took care of every single step, focusing on every part of it. Absolutely a wild head banging song, tons of violence blown up in a few minutes where the good Mario gives us a fantastic guitar solo.
Same thing for the following 'Eyes Of Abzu' that I quote quickly because in the end we get a score at the edge of the slam... really creepy!
Influences with bands like Unmerciful, Dying Fetus and why not... even our own Antropofagus are really felt. Everything that revolves around the American brutal school is contained in this album that I dare to define "epochal". 'Subterranean Revelations'... the next 'Embalmed In Visceral Fluids'... each song releases an unstoppable force. Once they're finished, you can't wait to hear them again.
Devangelic push relentlessly on the foot of the accelerator until the final 'Cryptic Resurrection'; those who expected drops or something like that will certainly be disappointed. There is absolutely no emotional drop while listening to the whole work.
Impeccably designed album. Great group and study work on every single piece. "Ersetu" reveals itself in my opinion as the album of the full maturity of the band. Everything has been taken care of in detail and the final result is its most complete demonstration. We are at a turning point, finally even Italy will have a flag carrier in the Olympus of brutal death metal.
I don't consider myself absolutely biased considering the origin of this band; if you love the good old brutal death without any kind of contamination this album will surely satisfy your needs.
An album to buy with your eyes closed. Awesome! Speechless!
