Defilementory - The Dismal Ascension
With a really dark atmosphere and some really hateful and nasty death metal tunes, came Defilementory to do what their name declares. They are Defilementory from Denmark and they came to defile what's holy or not, with their first full length. Succeeding an EP in 2010 and a demo in 2011, the time for a more massive dose of unholy and brutal death metal had come. Well did I say brutal? Don't get misguided and think that the boys from Roskilde follow the Suffo-school of death metal. No sir. Defilementory play dark and rotten death metal following the lead of pioneers as Morbid Angel and Immolation. In fact the more I listen to "The Dismal Ascension" the more I come to a conclusion that the biggest reference of this band must be Immolation. It is the way they tie their riffs with the drumming patterns that definitely blast the shit out of em but also follow more uncompromising patterns in some, driving the whole outcome to a whole other kind of death metal frenzy!
Their aim is the aura. It must be always about the aura to them. The aura of rot circling you. You know… the kind of feeling Immolation brought in their darkest moments, or even bands as Incantation. Their main structure goes around two or three swirling riffs that pack a lot of potential and enhance constantly with some variations. Crazy chords played together and a bass player that is solid as a rock and keeps the base tight in a hurricane of blasting and diverse performance. The vocal lines follow the lead of the instruments, aiming to get the most out of the darkness their music hides. And again... Did I say hides? Well, not at all. In fact darkness is their ally in all this chaos as the boys manage to create an atmosphere so claustrophobic and so massive, that makes you feel it in your gut.
Defilementory have created an epic first full length, that succeeds in gathering the finest elements from bands of the scene we all love, but on the same time, they have their own touch in all this. And this is something that get's straightened out from the first minute. Production has its special place in this review as it is the best fitting, to bring their style forth. Really fits them and get's everything clear without making the outcome xtra shiny. The proper amount of dirt this style of death metal requires is all there but also, everything is heard loud and clear. The only negative I actually have to say about it, should be the artwork. I mean with such a killer music, why pick such a minimal artwork? Anyway this won't have to affect the ones willing to purchase this as we're talking about a band that has tons of potential with one of the finest death metal debut albums out there! Sink in the abyss with them damn it!
