CxOxSx - Soundtrack Of Funny Years
CxOxSx are about as brutal as Grindcore can get... with a bit of Hardcore and class mixed in. The band has been putting in their 100 percent for almost seventeen years, and to commemorate that 'Soundtrack Of Funny Years' is sort of both a new album for fans to enjoy and a compilation. The first disc is the new stuff, full of very brief, yet well produced Grindcore tracks with the right amount of layered indecipherable growls amidst high pitched shrieks and blast beats of drums mixed with a hellfire arsenal of guitar chuggings... sometimes much slower than others, which helps add the groove elements and maybe a bit of Punk/ Hardcore (just listen to "Too Much" for an example of this). Other tracks like "Blast Me" are more straightforward Grindcore with a constant presence of buzzing guitars that, along with the vocals, can tend to blot out the drums and bass, which can be an unfortunate result in most cases with this sort of genre. Vocally, fans might prefer the deeper ones because on a track like this the higher pitched ones sound a bit more whining as opposed to just piercing and harsh. "Catholic" relies more on a Death Metal structure, a hint at the second half the album which is all a bit more Death Metal oriented with less focus on the segmented, groovy Hardcore chugs as it is comprised of unreleased work and an EP.
After the sixteen 'new' tracks, the next part is either hidden gems or repeats for some. The first three tracks are 'unreleased,' but feel like they could fit just as well with the new ones for the slick production and aggressive undertones, though some might consider this half of the disc the heaviest of all, starting with "Open Your Ears." The next thirteen are all from the 'All 4 Nothing' EP, and unfortunately don't have as much variation as the first sixteen did. Track after track everything suddenly feels like a freight train with the high levels of distortion spewing from the guitars and on top of the vocal dual assault that slightly detracts from the groove parts earlier on the album. While this is certainly more traditional Grindcore when it comes to a track like "Sanza Pene" that purists will enjoy, at the same time by the end of track 32 fans just may wonder where all the time went by, and how an album that seemed so long ended up so short. Time. That may be the one main issue with this album as most of the tracks are barely two minutes long, and sometimes less, and sometimes the tracks will cut off at the wrong moments and jump into the next one, leaving some listeners hanging. However, those who like Grindcore, or even Deathcore on speed, will find CxOxSx worth checking out, especially if they don't mind a bit of Punk groove mixed in.
