Cruxifiction - The Coming
'The Coming' is a black metal debut from French 3 man band, Cruxifiction. While some might consider them 'just another anti-Christian speed black metal band at first, the album slowly develops into more. It is harsh but mid paced black metal with layered vocals that vary from dark snarls to high pitched shrieks- not as high as Cradle but more along the lines of Gorgoroth. When layered they sound best at making a terrifying effect. The music is usually very melodic as opposed to just tremolo picking while still featuring a bit of a gritty sound such as on "Death Is The Only Way" with the buzzsaw guitars. Suddenly it will break for a very melodic soft part with funeral atmosphere; very effective at breaking away from the standard black metal sound which is usually all about speed. The same can be said for "Silent Traitor," except they further experiment with faded church chanting in the background which is very pleasant and a great paradox amongst the vile sound of black metal. It goes along well with the anti-Christianity themes of the music.
Some might be able to hear the Immortal influences in the riffs from songs like "I'll Bless You" from the harsh guitar tone and rhythms. The heaviest track would have to be "The New Messiah"- fast tremolo picking but it doesn't sound too much of a headache due to the decent production to make everything be heard properly. So those looking for a Satanic overdose should look right there. Overall this album isn't as amazing as Deathspell Omega or terrifying as Marduk- both of which also seem to focus on these Satanic vs. Christian elements within their music- but it falls in between of sticking out from the usual mediocre bands out there with the slight variations on tracks when they aren't blasting black metal. It's not too generic in song structure and just features a few interesting parts to make it worth listening to. So, if one likes their band corpsepainted and not always trying to sound like Darkthrone, then 'The Coming' will certainly be what they've been anticipating.
