Corpse Garden - Burnt By The Light
“We are the hate becoming flesh!” Those are the strong words that echo in the audio intro of Corpse Garden’s full-length album “Burnt By The Light” Corpse Garden is a technical death metal band from Costa Rica and are well known amongst the Central American metal community. This band won the Central American Wacken Metal Battle and after listening to their latest album I can see why. “Burnt By The Light” is an intense ten track album with a killer sound that is only accomplished by a hard working band who exhibits a tremendous effort and precision put into each song. The musical composition of their songs is anything but sloppy. Even with the brutal death growls, blast beats, and slamming riffs the timing is amazing and creates solid recordings. On the song “Architects Of Deception” the guitar chords used are very dark making ultra heavy riffs, and have a great tempo that follows the double bass drum rhythm perfectly. I like the singers vocal style on this song too because he is not over doing the growls and mixes some melodic death metal into the track. On the song “Killing In The Name Of God” the lyrics and vocals are extremely heavy. When the singer growls the blast beats go all out blitzkrieg and the guitar fills are lightening quick. That is my favorite song on the album since the band’s sound is capture with a tremendous amount of emotion in the musicianship and the song writing. The title track “Burnt By The Light” is a close second favorite. The introduction to that song is low with a thundering bass tone and builds up to an intense thrash/ death metal guitar riff. There is a part in the song where the music dies down and then comes right back with more instrumental insanity and window shattering vocals. The solo in the title track is out of this world with sweep picking and technical genius.
A huge plus that makes this album pure technical death metal brilliance is the outstanding production value. The tracks all have a crisp metal sound where the distortion levels are perfect to the point where the instruments do not drown out the vocals. The vocals also sound great with no effects and are pure brutal technical death metal vocals that I are clear even during the growls. The lead guitar parts are highly impressive and perfectly woven into song’s like “Echoes Of Death” and “Unspoken Words.” The two guitarist Luis Cambronero and Federico Gutierrez are a great technical death metal duo who create some amazing riffs and leads. I personally have always been picky when it comes to death metal vocals, but I can say the vocals on this album work well with the music packing a punch that turns the volume up beyond eleven. These ambitious Costa Rican technical death metal musicians may be following in the foot steps of the classic death metal greats, but bring forth an impressive death metal sound that is refreshing and sure to get the head banging from the technical insanity. “Burnt By The Light” is an album that is sure to make any death metal fan happy and I recommend this album without question. Corpse Garden is well worth checking out and I can’t wait to see what this band comes out with next.
