Coraxo - Starlit Flame

Tampere (Finland) most recently gave birth to Coraxo in September 2013 and "Starlit Flame" is their first EP which is quite amazing considering this 2 piece (Tomi - vocals, guitars, bass and programming + Ville - drums) have just put this outfit together.

Many are terming Coraxo as being electronic technical death metal to me when I listened to "Starlit Flame" it was far from this analyses. I definitely would term this band with this album as being electro/industrial and this music is definitely something I would find and gladly dance to at the local goth club. This is surely the music of the modern gothic and industrial scenes not much the metal scene but there are many metalheads who willingly would cross over for this and I am sure those who appreciate tech-death and industrial musics would find home within this album non-the-less.

I do admit though that the 6th track titled 'Escape' is the most metal sounding in the lines of tech-death so maybe this is where "Starlit Flame" is getting that reputation with quite a few in the scenes. I really love the sci-fi soundscapes and especially with the 1st track 'LV-426 J318.5-22', great opening.

Each of these tracks pretty much stand apart to each their own however at the same time everything fits nicely together within the concepts of this album. It took a few listens to grow on my but now I do fully appreciated the 7th and closing track which is an interesting twist on Sepultura's 'Refuse/Resist'. There is a lot of fire within this album and passion behind this band and am impressed again with this being their first EP, I am curious to know what their followup will be like. The cold dark extraterrestrial like vocals jump out and lead the layered demonic sounds of the instruments shadowing behind it.

"Starlit Flame" is the tool which Coraxo used in order to create the connection between our world and those beyond what we know as the solar system.

My advice is to approach this album as being electro/industrial and keep metal out from your mind even if it is tech-death and allow yourself to be open to it's concept and you will love it and enjoy it just as I have. I give "Starlit Flame" 4 on 5 stars - highly recommend this gem.
