Coprostasis - Dirty Exterminating Arrogant Turbo Holocaust
This is a gore obsessed death metal trio from Bulgaria that have been around since 2002, this is their second release and in short it should read ‘D.E.A.T.H.’ rather than the long mouthful in the review title. The first real track ‘Dimensions of Brain Fermentation’ sounds a little mixing happening with Haemorrhage and some of the South American death metal monsters. Laden with groove, a big fat funky bass sound feels ever present and is justifiably the backbone of most of the arrangements. The compressed guitar tone is cool, this is a musical style that does not really do sustain, it is missed, but not an influence on your enjoyment in the death metal of this style and presentation. Pig squealing appears unfortunately, it’s just a pet-hate of mine, it is slightly suited to the music although I still cannot see the point in it to be honest.
If you are looking for more single note running guitar riffs then look out for ‘Porno In Purgatory’, blink and you will miss it, but then take solace in longer hard hitters like ‘The Bloody Sink’. In some respects, I hear a little Macabre, a little bit of thought in the arrangements, the way the time changes occur work out well for your listening experience and the general umpa ratatat pace in the verse with the chugging guitars taking the main stage for me with their dominance. This does not take itself too seriously, and when you look at some of the track titles, yes, I can see why. The music is competent, the sound is mixed well and the whole package right down to the artwork seems to fit with a band that is nearly there. There is a little way to go for me but I take joy in giving Coprostatis credit where credit is due, this is a promising second release.
