Colossus - Degenesis
I didn’t know what to expect when I first put this CD in my stereo, so the raging madness that filled my ears is the same that grabbed me by the throat and throttled me for the next 25 minutes! Colossus bring forth a breath of fresh air to the genre of technical death metal with an array of time and tempo changes that keep the listener on the edge of the abyss for the entire duration. While there are influences and vibes such as Origin, Obscura, Architectural Genocide, and a host of others; Colossus take the technical aspect of the genre and totally rewrite the blueprint!
This is not to discredit the other bands, but these guys add such a heaviness and brutality to this genre that you can’t help but realize they aren’t just Colossus by name, but also in form. Another thing I notice is that these guys seem to be tuned a little lower than others playing this type of metal, and that influences the overall feel of the music. The bass is also brought up a bit and has a more prominent part in forming the foundation of some of the songs. Any time a band brings the bass to the forefront of things, the more intricate sounding they can become. As far as other influences go, Colossus give us a glimpse one of the finest examples of the use of grindcore elements within the style of technical death metal. It’s not a constant throughout the album, but you will notice them here and there. I noticed it in the tracks 'Abysmal Tectonic Tyrants', 'Malignant Eye Of Inexorable Ruin', and 'Spiteful Obliteration Of An Obsolete Reality'.
I know the year has a lot of time left, but I think that it’s safe to say that Colossus’ “Degenesis” is going to be one of the best technical death metal albums of the year. These 7 songs serve a purpose, and purpose is to let us know that Colossus is here and are ready to lead the charge of technical death metal into the next decade and beyond. Dan Klein (drums, vocals), Steven Chaves (bass, vocals), and Von Young (guitars) have come together to create this massive entity and they have made it extremely brutal as it is technical. I like to talk a lot about a band’s passion for their art and the respect they deserve. Colossus is no different. This is a band that can be looked up to when it comes to the passion and work ethic it takes to create such a brutal and menacing release that so many strive for. This is recommended for anyone into technical, brutal, and traditional death metal, so get in touch with the band or comatose music for more info. This CD will not disappoint. In fact, I am listening to it again right now! Go get this massive beast added to your collection!
