Coffins - Beyond The Circular Demise

I'm not gonna lie to ya, but I don't know much about Coffins. I know I know. I'd seen the name but honestly had never listened to them. With the announcement of the upcoming LP, I started seeing a lot of shares and mentions. One stating "Coffins is releasing the heaviest album of the year". Not sure if that previous quote is word for word, but ya get the point. So, obviously that got my attention and I was stoked to get the send to review it. I've since gone back into their catalog and checked out older material.

For those, like me, that may be unaware.....Coffins hails from Tokyo, Japan. They have stayed the course and not strayed from their sound. They've only seemed to get heavier, gnarlier and the songwriting has progressed. With all this outta the way............onto their newest offering, "Beyond The Circular Demise".

Opening up with 'Terminate By Own Prophecy', damn, it's like getting hit upside your head with a cinder block. A cinder block of hellish weight. Just pure brutality. The recording plays well into their style too. Somewhat cavernous. Not polished. Just no frills meat and potatoes. They've come to one thing.......CRUSH! For fans of their older work, you'll be more than hyped. This is a step above, IMO. It's heavier, vocals are more demonic, it's the total package. So, enjoy this tune as you can't help but bang your head to the pummeling d beats, blasts, thrashing filth.

A couple tracks away, is 'Forgotten Cemetery'. This song attacks with ferocity. A very welcomed attack. This shit is THICK! Blasting off with the sickest of riffs, a tempo change (with the same riff ahhhhhh!) then into pure somber doom. Fuck, how'd I sleep on Coffins THIS long???? The disgusting low end shines through with a short bass break leading into yet another power riff. These dudes have definitely mastered their craft. The dynamics are showcased in this track as you enter an, almost, unsettling bridge followed by a fist pounding section then quickly back to the opening riff that just melts your head.

'Birth Postmortem'!!!!!! Crusty nastiness. So heavy. What do they tune to? I can't get enough of this recording. Every riff charges. Whether it be a doom riff, thrash riff, blast riff whatever. This just drives HARD. Like a locomotive off the rails and it's going to destroy all in it's path.

Beginning with the sound of earth's demise, 'Gateways To Dystopia' closes out this monster. Clocking in at the longest track, it has the feel of the ender, which I find important in an album's track listing. Slow and pounding. It's a skull splitter, like the rest of the album. For minutes of being trampled, it becomes almost a rhythmic meditation. Then towards the end, Coffins hits the switch and tosses in a mid tempo section to close out the LP, keep you on your toes and continue banging the head. "Beyond The Circular Demise" ends every bit as brutal as it started.

An instant classic for those who love the heavy, the nasty and the unforgiving. GET THIS!
