Carcinoid - Metastatic Declination
Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, Carcinoid is about to drop their first full length album - "Metastatic Declination" - on Memento Mori (CD) and Blood Harvest (vinyl).
When the song 'Sorrow' began, I was stoked. Coming straight out of the intro track, it was crusty, unpolished, nasty....... But I've got to give an honest review. All, obviously, IMO! There are definitely parts/riffs/sections of this album that I'm way into. But, parts. Each song has it's moments. Catchy parts that I caught myself really jamming, then there seemed to be some filler. Not really any songs on this LP that I thoroughly enjoyed beginning to end.
The recording/mix, itself didn't win me over. The more and more the album went along, I kept thinking of many bands doing this style of filthy riffs, cavernous vocals, hammering drums, raw recordings etc. and I compared. I'm not saying that this album won't win the hearts of the lovers of filth, but I feel in an era where this style is prevalent, there are a substantial amount of other bands I'd prefer to jam. I'm definitely not hating on them or any band writing and performing death metal.
This review is purely based on how I reacted to this piece of work. There was an overall progression from their 2018 demo to their first LP and I'd like to hear future work from these dudes, but "Metastatic Declination" probably won't make it's way into a steady rotation.
Stand out tracks:
'Sorrow'
'Suffering Reborn'
