Blue Hummingbird On The Left - Alt Tlachinolli

Supernatural forces gather in communion with nature and the cosmos. sounds, senses. The fusion of man and beast. More than just music, any band that is part of the Black Twilight Circle carries, as a close element of their quintessence as musicians and people, their ancestral heritage and their inherited beliefs.

Huitzilopochtli, better known as Blue Hummingbird On The Left, is a band that, like many of the bands that are part of the Black Twilight Circle, shares musician with many of the acts that compose this assembly of ensembles. Formed in 2010, they have released 3 works before this first full length (“Alt Tlachinolli” came out through Iron Bonehead in early February): one EP and two splits with bands part of the BTC (Volahn and Kallathon).

The Black Twilight Circle has been, since its beginning, like many other black metal circles: a close group of like minded people with common ideals and perspectives of, and in, Life. A transversal line touches all the projects that make BTC what it is. You can find, in all their musical endeavours, certain elements that take you back to a time and place, in time, with a so specific philosophy and mysticism. The ability that these musicians have to, and this expression is quite relevant to me: tint a landscape with their musical creations that one is able to feel and see what lives beyond the songs and the melodies.

Throughout the years I have been following – as possible – the releases from this “militia” of dark musicians. Not all are my cup of tea, but then again, I have not been able to, yet, “dissect” all the projects/entities that form the BTC. I had, in the past, heard some songs by BML, but never gave them my total attention – Volahn have to be the ones that probably put in the biggest trance like state – until I received the promo for their new – and first LP. Iron Bonehead are the ones that took these small pieces of dark crafts and released a beast of a record! I will, most definitely, give their back catalogue more time and attention, and absorb it properly.

Nine ritual intonations. Nine sacramental chants. Nine invocation songs. Nine beasts.

As soon as the records starts to play, one is truly shown where the band is coming from. Mayan temples are “shown” and Mayan deities “summoned”. The staple of the bands is, and will always be, black metal, without a doubt, but, like the Nordic bands and the Viking ancestry, these bands convey – as I said before – their culture on their music and messages. The painting that is painted by this group of individuals gather around this very abstract, but understandable, image of a past and strong world.

Their music is ferocious as their gods, and the melody is BTC, which is lovely. All ensembles part of the BTC have variances but, at the same time, you can hear that they are part of this assembly. As I also said, I am not a deep connoiseur of all the projects, but the ones that I am familiar with, do carry that scent, that fragrance. BML gives us, in this first LP, a very strong and powerful image of their Black Metal, grasping the listener from the beginning and violently shaking his foundations to the ground. Powerful drums, melodic guitars that, with a very discernible sound, drive the audiophile on an expedition to the days of old gods and bloody rituals. The vocals are full of depth and authority, acting as leaders, crafting choral melodies.

'Rain Campaign' showcases perfectly, in my opinion, the essence of BML, as it gives you, right in the beginning of the song, a taste of the essence of the Mayan musical culture and the primeval ritual dances and divinities’ worshiping songs, to jump, at once, to a savage black metal tempo full of melody and anger!

The Black Twilight Circle is, by now, a well know name in the black metal world, a more than established group of minds that, together, craft this ritualist/tribal beast.

As it begins, it ends. Drums blast their transcendent sounds as we, Humans, hope for the acceptance of those that watch over us, beyond the mortal sphere where we live. Blood for the Gods!
