Blodsrit - Hinterland

The tropes of Black Metal are not all embraced by Blodsrit and this is a fine lack. The Swedish band Blodsrit have continued to release albums over the past eight or nine years and this one, HINTERLAND, is an excellent example of black metal that adds folkish (read: pagan) elements without sounding too much like Einherjer or some other similar Scandinavian band. Blodsrit is a real metal band. The CD opens on a deliberately pained and slow voice that makes claims about the life its source follows and the no-bullshit (I mean this term in a technical way as employed by Harry Frankfurt) honesty means of life that he means to live. Underneath this voice the band is playing quietly and slowly, ambiently maybe is a batter word, instead of the normal keyboards. I mean to say, this is a real band worked by real people making physical music.

The band then opens for real on the second track, “Hinterland,” with proper and black metal vox over a dirty rock sound that reminds me very much of newer Darkthrone. But the album speeds up as the album progresses but that is not all it does. For instance, on tracks like “Revolutionary Warfare,” after the guitars are have thrown themselves with al force into the strength of the track, the track then slows down to a rumbling drum sequence over which the vox are increased and the tension is re-arranged for the listener all over. Well done. Another example of awesome changes in the album effort is the track, “The Last Moans of Hope,” in which the track opens with some melancholic slow guitar work, nothing like Sunn O))) of course, but something that eases the track out before the brash sounds take over. Then later in this track, the song creates a segment for picked clean strings that carry the rhythm while another guitar plays something more akin to metal and the drums build back to full. I mean to say here that this is song writing and that Blodsrit have a fully developed sound and a product that appeals to me as one who listens to a lot of “dark music” and to a lot of metal.
