Blind By Faith - Chernobyl Survivor
Blinded By Faith are yet another one of those bands that surprize the hell out of you by incorporating a slew of influences mixed with fresh ideas and a passion for all things metal. The result is an astonishing array of aural obliteration that will most definitely catch your attention before the CD is 1 minute into the first song. I really like it when bands approach their work with a ferocity and originiality not seend since the masters and originators back in the day. To me this disc was like a revival of times long gone. But, even so, this album is years ahead of its time in the sense that the near flawless intersection of genres is done with such precision. It's almost like years ago certain surgeries were done with almost obsolete instruments but now these same surgeries are done with lazers and thre is little to no scar tissue afterwards. That is how precisely blended all these influences are.
On the first track, which is the title track, the band goes right to work on this hideous monster of an album, the riffing is slightly reminiscent of "Cowboys from Hell" era from Pantera. The drum work is pretty run of the mill here but is nice and thick in production then the covals come in and remind me of a bastardized version of In Flames and Children of Bodom. All of a sudden there is a clean vocal pattern which is kind of like a mixture of Lotte (ex-Crematory) and Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth. From the get go these guys pull out all the stops on this song. Anymore, I try to avoid track by track reviews but I had to describe this track just to let all you metal heads know what you are in for. I mean the detail is so fine that you can't tell if this is death/thrash or thrash/death. Just based on this track These guys need a genre all their own. On subsequent tracks the riffage sounds a bit sludgy at times, but when the solos kick in they are as crisp and clear as can be. It's like one guitarist will do a death/thrash style riff and the other guitarist will add a progressive solo over the top of it. The drum work seems to get progressively better and more technical as the album progresses. The drummer is quite profficient and everything is well placed and the added keyboards in certain parts really adds to the overall feel of what you will experience. Imagine if you will old school death metal and new age thrash with a progressive element and the blackened edge being the cherry on top. The one thing that annoys me about this release, and this seems to plague a lot of bands, is the use of double tracking vocals. I mean it definitely does work for this CD, but so many bands are doing it these days that it seems the more you do it the more brutal you are. The result is countless copycat bands trying to out double-track each other. That is my only bitch about this album, but it is the sheer musical genius of these guys that make this tolerable to the point of nothing more than an afterthought.
If you are into melodic death, thrash, progressive, blackened metal with influences in the likeness of Carcass, In Flames, Pantera, Opeth, Crematory, Despised Icon just to name a few, then I highly recommend this cd to every metal head out there. With this release these guys have laid a sound foundation to further build upon and I see absolutely no reason why these guys should not have a very long and sucessful career. I urge you all to have faith in Blinded by Faith. They will not disappoint.
