Blessed Curse - Blessed Curse

USA thrash band, debut album, where the hell did this lot come from! This is great, mixing everything between Kreator and beyond, in fact from that German band’s late 80’s era if I am pinpointing anything, especially songs like ‘Hellraisers’ and Slaughtered Like Pigs’. There is some old Slayer, old Exodus, and everything in between, but if you’re listening pleasure comes with a time constraint, be prepared for a long wait, this is well over the one hour mark.

After doing some digging around the internet, Blessed Curse in fact changed their name from Devastator, it then becomes clear that quite a few of these tracks were available on demos under the aforementioned previous moniker. But that really does not matter, this is a great thrash release.

After going through this album for the first time, I am wondering where have I heard those riffs,  and that sound before? It’s very common to pay homage to your heroes, and in Blessed Curse’s defence, it’s in their own style, but it’s very surreal to hear some of these tunes after living with thrash music for most of my life, there are similarities, but all the good ones lets make that perfectly clear! I don’t really need to go in depth and analyse each and every piece of music, all I need to say is that Blessed Curse embody the spirit of true, genuine thrash metal. The riffs are like cluster bombs of dynamite being ignited, the vocals are very Baloff/Petrozza, the arrangements verge on reaching thrash metals promised land and the artwork epitomises every that thrash was, is and will be famous for. If you like thrash, this album is essential. But I cannot leave this review without mentioning the quality of tracks like ‘March of the Wicked’ and ‘The Devil’s Mark’ where you can even hear some Overkill influences, this is such a well-rounded effort. Ok, you could say that they have borrowed this and that from many of the genre greats, but in fact it’s for me to say that blessed curse merely take a pinch of everything and deliver one the thrash albums of the year and I find this especially commendable for a relatively unknown band, that will hopefully not be so for long.
