Algebra - Polymorph

Time for some Algebra! Instead of doing math problems I am talking about cranking up this killer thrash band from Switzerland. The name caught me off guard at first, but once I heard the opening riff to the band’s full length album “Polymorph” the band’s name did not matter anymore. These guys now how to play fast aggressive in your face thrash metal. Their overall sound is similar to certain thrash bands like Slayer, Sodom, and Destruction. Even though Algebra’s music is mainly thrash based I do hear some death and groove metal influence. The first song “S.O.B.” sets way for an album full of heavy fast paced thrash metal. I am really impressed with the guitar playing and the song’s main riff is crushing. Along with great heavy riffs the drumming is extremely powerful with brilliant timing. On the next song “Pig Corporation” the band starts with a groove metal style guitar riff and incorporates their aggressive thrash sound to create a heavy balanced tune. I find the singer’s vocal style to be very intense. He shouts out the lyrics with a harsh dark tone. This approach is great, but can become repetitive after a couple songs.

One song that stood out on this album was “Deviant.” The band experiments more on this song with diverse sounding rhythms and timing. During the guitar solo the guitarist does some insane sweep patterns and makes some unbelievable screeching sounds. On the title track “Polymorph” Algebra keeps up the heavy slow riff introductions that break into head banging thrash parts. On this album there are times where the music is following a groove and then quickly turns into ultimate thrash insanity. “Tim’s Calvary” is an awesome song because the band again experiments with their sound. This time the band comes up with contrasting vocals during the chorus. As the singer is yelling out the lyrics there are other singers in the background singing giving the song a triumphant edge. The guitar solo is another phenomenal show of sweeping and technical ability. No matter the song on this lead guitarist brings forth his own distinct style and creates awesome guitar solos.

Algebra is a heavy thrash band that is not afraid to experiment. Their album “Polymorph” is a great metal release that I highly recommend checking out. From the great riffs to high quality thrash songs I find the entire album to be well produced. Not too many metal bands can hit a home run with their first full length album, but I think Algebra did an amazing job introducing the world to heavy thrash from Switzerland. If you are into aggressive sounding thrash metal this band is right for you. I believe if math teachers played some Algebra before teaching their students actual Algebra they might be able to pump the kids up. However, in the end the class room would get demolished from all the moshing. That would be AWESOME!
