Abhorrent Deformity - Slaughter Monolith
Abhorrent Deformity have made such an improvement since their last effort. The 2 albums are like night and day in comparison. Their new album “Slaughter Monolith” is outrageously horrific in such a passionate way. Devastatingly beautiful in its deliverance, the listener must still prepare for the intense brutality spewed forth from these 4 gentlemen. The riffs have a unique bite to them that not too many bands playing brutal death metal have. There is a certain vibe of melody as well and it really works. If the songs weren’t constructed as they were, in regards to the riffs, I believe it would have sounded too choppy and “core-ish”. I am very impressed with the riff structure. It takes me back to such albums as Internal Bleeding’s “Voracious Contempt”, Suffocation’s “Blood Oath”, and a more grinding version of Gorguts’ “Obscura” album.
I imagine the drums are triggered to a certain extent, but the sound is so overwhelmingly massive that it really doesn’t matter at the end of the day. The varying tempos throughout this release are more than enough to keep things interesting. There are some traditional death metal and grindcore vibes picked up in the playing and that makes for some decent variations in the drummer’s style. The low end bass rumbles can be felt throughout these 12 tracks, however, it is not a constant, The band goes for a more strategic placement as to where the bass lines are more noticeable and most effective. This approach sheds the monotony of a continuous rumbling which some might find annoying.
The vocal style for this release is unique to say the least. Instead of the typical guttural growls, the vocalist opts for some mid level screams. I would say They could be compared to the mighty Brett Hoffman (R.I.P.) (ex-Malevolent Creation). This is a great follow up to their last effort and one that leaves it forgettable. This new album is so much better, and it is obvious that the band has matured quite a bit. These guys have definitely earned my respect with this latest offering and I am quite sure that I am going to be playing this one a lot. This release is sure to set the pace for future releases to come. Completely barbaric and insane, yet controlled with extreme precision. Comatose Music has released another masterpiece of brutal death metal!
