The cosmopolitans of Dissenter

interview with Stocker on 13-06-2004

Please give us a short introduction of yourself?
Hell(o)! Let me introduce you our quartet: Garbaty 'Yaha' (voc, bass), Stocker (guitars), Rob (guitars), Mlody (drums).
We're hailing from Poland. If you never heard about us, you should fix that mistake as quick as you can haha.

How did you evolve comparing to the previous album?
It's hard to say how did we evolved because ’Apocalypse...’ were recorded by the former guitarist - Heter - with his own style, feeling, solo parts etc. I think ’Contamination’ sounds more pathetic and has a bit easier track structures.
’Apocalypse...’ has more twisted parts, someone said that it's more mathematic album. The bass parts are brutal and steady as usual, the drum section evolved in speed matter, some blasts are passing by in over 200 BPM tempos. Oh, I almost forgot, the solos... Solo parts are far more melodic, but not in the pretty melody meaning, there are dehumanized, twisting parts played with loads of passion. Close your eyes and follow the solo part in ’In Flames Of Hate’ and you'll know what I mean. All the solos were recorded by Rob, in my opinion he's a genius haha. I enjoy his work very much.

Do you practice to become more technical or to release the daily stress?
I know few better things to do to release my daily stress... if you know what I mean haha. But in fact I think that I practice because of both these reasons. Guitar is my passion and I'm too far in playing this instrument to quit. I'm abnormally carefull about my hands because if anything happen that would cause me stop playing I'd be the most unhappy man you ever met haha. Playing with people who strive for perfection makes everyone of us work hard to play better, faster, more technical or just to follow the rest. These are our rules, not to stand in a place but evolve and I'm sure you'll hear the difference listening our next LP.

Why are there so many brutal bands from Poland?
Why? Hell, I have no idea. I know there are many brutal bands but we have a lot of heavy, thrash, black etc. bands in here.
I'm proud that polish scene is so tough. I can see concerts every week and every time I walk home shocked by another unknown by me band which kicked my ass so hard that I couldn't sit for a week haha. I'm glad that polish underground don't sleep. I hope we've a strong argument to join EU haha.

Who do you count as the metalpioneer from Poland? Why?
Ohh, there are a lot of bands that I'd call metalpioneers but It's senseless to write band names, because what would it be if I'd forgot about some band haha. Everyone who's interested in polish scene has it's own metalpioneers and favourites. I can tell you that I'm a maniacal fan of PARRICIDE and I won't say anything more haha.

Are you anti-religious because the pope is polish?
Noo, of course not. I'm more anti-clerical because this religious sect has a huge control in our country. Most of people here declare themselves as religious but their lifestyle says something comletely different. I think this few hundred years of fanatism made a huge hole in people's brain part responsible for their own opinion and individualism. I'm terrified, because as long as Poland will be ruled by clericals, there will be no progress in our way to freedom of mind. Could you imagine that in most places you're treated as a dissenter because you're not baptized? What a nonsense...

Ever felt the urge to masturbate when a new song is recorded?
Haha, no, no, it never went so far but yes, we're very glad if the new song is done and it sounds brutal enough for us. Man, you embarassed me haha. Enough joking...

How is the scene in Poland? Get support from local fans, clubs etc?
Yes, we can count for people's support, of course like everywhere you can find people that don't wish you well but these are rather single individuals. It's nice having some friends supporting you and your band. All the people who supported us in any way can count on our support whenever they need help. It's an unwritten rule that's functioning here. But I think it's exactly like anywhere else on this jungle planet.

Your opinion about joining the European Community? Will it be a step forward?
In my opinion it'll be a huge step forward. Since joining the EU, theoretically, we can choose in which european country we would like to live in and we can move there. For example Garbaty moved to London some time ago. Beeing the part of EU give us a feeling, that we finally destroyed communism and reached some level of democration. That's enough, I don't like to talk about politics.

Are there many western ideas entering your society? Or holding on to communism?
As I said we theoretically destroyed communism but of course the reminiscence of it will follow polish people until we get used to living in EU. Polish people are a bit cosmopolitans, and our streets are starting to look as a westren country streets. Is it good? Is it bad? I have no idea.

Is there a country you would like to visit? Why?
I'd like to visit every country I'd never been. I like to travel to see new places and people habits. Until this day we didn't have a lot of opportunities to visit other countries with DISSENTER but I hope it'll change someday. As the most wanted on the list of countries I'd like to visit is Egypt, I'd like to go to Transilvania too, and I'd be glad if I could lay for about a week on a hawaiian beach haha and dive to see some coral reefs. We don't have it in Poland.

Why should we go on holiday in your country?
And why you shouldn't? Poland isn't a big country but we have Baltic see and impressive mountains terrains in here. There are a lot of places with no sign of civilisation, a lot of places showing the results of tectonical activity. And for western country mates there is a huge advantage. Poland isn't so expensive to spend vacation in here. When we toured Poland with Thrash'em All Festival two years ago, guys from VOMITORY were shocked about e.g. food prices in here, they said they want to stay in Poland haha. So, I hope I helped you to make a decision about this year's number one place to visit didn't I?

Ever noticed that you cannot sneeze with your eyes open?
Hell, you opened my eyes on this problem haha. And did you ever noticed that you can't spend a romantic evening with your girlfriend, with music and candles if there is no DISSENTER album in your CD collection? haha

Why should we buy the new album? Whom will get a discount?
As I said in previous question... haha. But if you're a fan of non-compromising blasts, dirty, furious guitars, sick, dehumanized solos and perfect growl you should go to the store right now or in the other way you'll regret it till the last day of your life. Remember that DISSENTER is a band that shows no mercy, our music isn't and won't be beautiful, sweet and peaceful.
