Malsain wants to create unpleasant and dark images in your head
interview made by Rick with Tenebres (December 2007)
And yet I strike again. Hello all you Brutal Maniacs. Today I have the pleasure and privilege to speak with Norway’s Malsain.
Hello and Welcome! Thank you for taking time out of you day to speak with us here at BRUTALISM.Com! Very much Appreciated.
Hi Rick, and thank you for the opportunity.
Please introduce yourself and what you do in Malsain.
I’m called Tenebres, and besides playing bass in the band I’m composing and writing most of our music and texts.
Malsain has been around for a few years now. For those who are not familiar with your band, please tell us how Malsain got started.
The first idea in 2001 was to make a one-man band, it was just a solo project. I had played in a few other bands but never felt 100% on the same wave as the other musicians. As my ideas were concretizing, I realized I would need other musicians... so Malsain started as a whole band in early 2003 with Valdr (guitars) and Phobos (drums). The 2 girls joined a bit later. Our first demo Søte Drømmer came one year after the first line-up and was recorded by Pytten. The same year we signed a contract with Dark Essence and recorded our debut album They Never Die at the end of the year. 2 years later we recorded The Disease, which was released in May 2007.
Malsain has a new album out called “The Disease”, which is out on Dark Essence. I had the chance to listen to it, and I gotta tell you, I was blown away by your material. This is such a great fucking record! Besides the musicianship, there is this dark emotion to it. The only description I can give it is “This is what my nightmares sound like”. Where did all this come from? How did this record come to be what it has become?
Well, I’m glad to hear you loved it. I also think your description couldn’t be better. The Disease is a product of the band’s natural evolution. From the beginning we have given a much larger place to the ambience than to the violence and speed usually found in extreme-metal. This is our force: the ability to create unpleasant and dark images in the head of our listeners rather than concentrating on chaotic violence. It all comes from our previous experience in the band as musicians, but also from our different invidual experiences. All those feelings are a natural part of the human mind: fear, rage, despair, hate, etc. Now put in music.
While forming this band, is this the sound you initially tried to seek out through trial and error, or did it just morph into this beautiful dark entity that you experience on The Disease?
At the very beginning we never tried making something “beautiful”. At our debuts we actually tried the exact opposite: play the ugliest music possible. I don’t know if we managed that back in the days, but it has become more “aesthetic” with the years. We could say that Malsain is beauty in ugliness, aesthetism in negativity. But still very depressive and rather violent. For those who never have heard our music before, I would say it’s an homogenic mix of music and feelings found in both black- and doom-metal.
As far as the lyrical side of “The Disease” it seems to tell a story. Is this accurate? What was the inspiration for the lyrics? I particularly like the sound clip from The Shinning.
Yes and no. The Disease is not a concept album in the meaning of a story from a beginning to an end, but most of the songs rotate around the same themes. It’s about misanthropy and the resignation resulting of it. It’s about depression and hate, two values that are closely linked to each other. The inspiration is mostly taken from the things we feel and see, but things that people never really talk about. Things that are not meant to be told to others. Elements from nightmares as well, real or not... created or consequent.
Do people have a tendency to go up to you and say-“Your singers a chick??? Holy Shit!” I was even a little surprised. Yeah Angela (Arch Enemy) is a bad ass, but I do have to admit, even I asked, that’s a fucking chick??WOW!! You Single-I’m only kidding LOL!! Skumring, what other bands have you played with prior to joining Malsain? And for the love of God tell us how you get your vocal cords to do that. I can’t even do what you do!
Hehe, yeah it happens all the time. But I actually think many girls are able to scream in a terrifying way, they just haven’t given it a shot yet. Some guys can growl, some others can’t. It’s probably the same for the other gender.
I don’t know if Skumring is single, it changes all the time... haha! But she has never been a vocalist in a band before Malsain no. She has played bass before that, and now she’s doing her keyboards stuff.
The Disease has gotten rave reviews by some really respected sources in the underground. Terrorizer, Vampire, Metal Hammer among others have had very positive things to say about this record. How did the band react to such an overwhelming response?
We are of course very honoured with all the excellent reviews we have gotten, and we’d like to thank these journalists who have understood our work and who appreciated it. But we’re not making music for the reviews. If good reviews are a good way to motivate us forward, they’re not mandatory for us to go on. I keep reading everywhere that we’re playing black-metal, but I don’t really understand that statement. We have stopped making black-metal a while ago already. So we tried to not care that much about the reviews, even if they can definitely put us in a very good mood!
Does it feel like the ball is rolling in the right direction for Malsain?
I think it does, but as long as WE think that the band is on the right path it’s the most important. I don’t know much about the metal public’s expectations... and honestly I don’t really care. Maybe Malsain is a “good marketing product”, maybe it’s a bad one. It doesn’t change a thing for us. We’re just doing what we think is best musically and image-wise. If the next album gets slaughtered in the reviews and hated by the metal public, so be it. We wouldn’t give out an album that we are 100% satisfied with, so we’ll know we have made a perfect album whatever people say.
Again Dark Essence is handling this release. How did Malsain come into contact with Dark Essence and how has the working relationship been thus far?
At first, one of the Dark Essence guys noticed us at a small local concert and he really loved our music. So of course, it was a natural choice to present our work to his label (among others) when we looked for a record deal. The relationship is good. We know the guys, and we know where to find them. It’s a great advantage working with people that are available and known.
Where did you guys get the cover art? Is there something special about it that ties into the theme of the record?
For the demo and the first album, we had to “outsource” the work even if I worked a little bit on the finitions. But The Disease was a more personal album and I wanted to make the cover myself. I made many ugly covers, and the rest of the band wasn’t happy with them... haha! So at last, a friend gave me some pictures she had taken just as a stock basis. It didn’t take long before I found what I was looking for. After some picture manipulations, we got the result that would fit the album perfectly on every points.
When Malsain sits down to write material, is it a true collaborative effort? Or is there 1 or 2 members that have the ideas and everyone else puts there 2 cents in?
I used to compose most of the songs, and then arranged them with the rest of the band. But I must say that everyone was very committed in the making process of The Disease, and the album is the result of everyone’s efforts. New ideas came when we were together arranging, and it was of course very welcome.
And the lyrics, is the whole band involved or does 1 person handle the lyrics?
On The Disease, it’s only me. Skumring wrote one text for the previous album.
What was the inspiring driving force behind Malsain? What made you guys get up and create the music you have created?
Obviously it’s not the chicks and the money... haha! If it was, so we picked up the wrong music genre. Let’s say the urge to express ourselves, I guess. Everybody has a creative flame sleeping inside, but few choose to let it burn outside. When it concerns Malsain, it’s a concept based and focus on negative values... but it doesn’t mean we wander around killing children. Everybody has a lot of negativity, but in our societies it’s usually taboo to let it out at all.
As the years have gone on, does it seem that writing material has gotten easier for you guys or is it still pretty difficult?
It’s not easier. Well, it could be... but then it would mean we are writing the same crap all over again with a different packaging. And we don’t want that: it’s boring for us and for our listeners. So I would say it’s becoming more and more difficult. We have to renew ourselves all the times, create something brand new, more advanced, deeper, more surprising. Each album has to be stronger than the previous one and it’s a constant challenge. But all of this has to come naturally. If I seat in a room and think “OK now I have to compose something totally different”, then it becomes artificial... and the songs resulting of this way to things will suck.
What do you guys use for inspiration when writing?
Nothing at all, it has to come naturally. If the inspiration is not here already, then compose another day when it is.
Norway is known for putting out some of the most incredible music over the last 20 years. Out of all these bands up and coming, who do Malsian feel deserves some recognition?
The ones that have, and the ones that ARE creating something on their own. I’m so fucking sick of bands playing the same crap that has been done before. Many bands are very good at doing it, but still they’re not creative enough to be remembered as makers. Obviously bands like Mayhem, Darkthrone and Burzum deserve respect for what they have built in this country. Emperor and Obtained Enslavement also are hugely creative bands in their craft. Dødheimsgard’s 3 last releases are also amazingly intelligent and they deserve credit for that.
There is a video on your myspace page. Any special thoughts you want to share about that experience?
That video is aging very fast... haha! It’s quite funny to watch it today actually. It’s a very moody mix of different clichés and references from classical horror movies and the song still works very well. I’m not sure it represents what Malsain is today, though. But yeah, it’s still a very OK video in its kind.
Are members of Malsain apart of any other bands, or is this the mainstay of all members?
Yes we almost all have side-projects. Skumring and me have each our electronic stuffs, Valdr is playing guitars in other bands, and Phobos is very busy. He just got recruited for Aeternus and is playing guitars and composing in his own band Gravdal.
Ok now for the love/hate part of being a musician. Any touring plans lined up in the near future? Are you guys apart of the Dark Essence Fest that is going to take place?
We’re working on the touring plans, yes. But it’s difficult for a small band like us, plus the fact that we all have different time plans and now live at different places. We’re not part of that fest, no. I feel we have played in Bergen way too much already.
Which brings to mind another good question, who above any other would you guys love to tour with?
It’s a good question, but we all have very different music tastes and fav bands so it’s hard to give you a straight answer. Personally, I’m a big fan of good old British doom so touring with My Dying Bride or Paradise Lost wouldn’t disturb me. I’m sure they’re wise and nice people as well, which is good. I wouldn’t like touring with total retards, hehe!
Do you personally handle touring or does that go through a booking agent/label?
We have not been “touring” yet, but we handle it ourselves. Dark Essence are sadly not involved at all in the booking process of their bands.
Any crazy stories during tours you would like to share with us?
You mean besides Nattefrost putting waffles in his cock? Nothing, really.
Is there a particular show that is very special to yourself/the band? Is there that one show that puts a huge smile on your face when you think about it?
Our second show ever was done in the frame of a live competition between bands of different music genres, and since we won the festival we have very good memories of it. We were very inexperienced and had a few technical problems... but it was very fun anyway.
Any chance of Malsain touring the states any time in the near future?
We’re struggling to tour in Europe already, so don’t you get those huge ideas already!
I keep looking at the band’s name and now I have to wonder-where did you guys come up with that? Malsain-that is such an interesting name.
I’m originally French, and malsain is a strong French adjective describing something very unpleasant and disturbing... something sick. It’s the best way to describe our imagery and music.
Out of your label mates, which band do you like the most?
I think everybody in the band has a different opinion, so I won’t answer for the rest of the band. Anyway they’re quite a few metal genres represented within the labels, so it’s hard to pick just one. They’re all very different bands really.
When all this has been said and done, in the later years of life, when touring and performing are simply out of the question. What do you look forward to? Any other ambitions?
Everyone in the bands have very different expectations with that of being a musician. Personally, I’ m not the biggest fan of live playing even though it’s really great sometimes. Creating music and putting your finished product on the market is for me for greatest of all. After usually 2 years of work, it’s a sweet relief to hold the CD in your hand at last. That’s what keeps me going... it’s the ultimate reward. If the album gets great reviews everywhere (like The Disease), it’s a very welcome bonus.
Have you begun to work on any new material?
Yes I have, but very little yet. You cannot expect our third album to come out anytime soon... it will demand much more work than the previous ones.
What can we expect from Malsain in the future? Honestly I can’t wait.
You can surely expect surprises. As I said before, it’s time for a renewal. The Disease is a logical continuation of They Never Die, but it’s much deeper and introduces some new sides of our music. In the next release we will develop those new sides and create something much more surprising and varied. It will still be Malsain, and our cold ambience remains our trademark anyway. But it will be different, no doubt about that.
Has there been any apprehension about writing the next record? I’m not saying it can’t be done, and I’m not trying to add pressure or anything like that. The Disease is such an awesome body of work, does it seem overwhelming to write a follow up? I am having a hard time trying to figure out how you guys are gonna top this record. Is there that kind of tension within Malsain? Again, I’m not saying it can’t be done, but these songs are so fucking good, I can’t see at this time how they could be topped. See and this will be cool because this time next year Malsain will hit me with an even better record.
Thank you very much for your compliments, they’re much appreciated. Well, we could spend time making a “The Disease +++” but as I just explained, we won’t. It would be too easy and predictable. Predictability is such a boring thing, isn’t it? We will not change our path, but let’s say that the path we have followed so far will be taking different directions... at the very same time. It will not be one path anymore, but several at the same time. Expect a new Malsain, but not too soon. It will take time to spawn our ambitions. To give you more clues, you can hear that the song Intruder was quite different from what we had done previously. You will hear more of that in the future.
Anything else you would like to add?
Yes, we’re currently working on touring several places in Europe. So if you’re a fan, don’t give up hope. We’re trying our best here.
Again I want to thank you for your time. So in the Immortal words of Twan, LAST RITES?
Since you mention Immortal, don’t eat yellow snow.
Thank You again for joining us. Keep in touch-I will most definitely do the same.
Thank you, Rick. See you around!
