Bonegnawer ain't sissy vampire bullshit
Gore-and-Horror Death Metal have always had its fair share in the entire Extreme Metal genre but only a handful have made an impact in the 90’s or even considered as timeless classics.
Forward to year 2009, comes one of the most recognizable Gore / Horror Death Metal butchers BONE GNAWER, featuring some of the most elite musicians in the industry. With Death Metal icon Kam Lee (Massacre/ex-Denial Fiend/ex-Mantas/Death) serving up some of his trademark growls and along with his cannibal-comrades Rogga Johansson (Paganizer/Demiurg/Ribspreader, etc), Morgan Lie from Swedish Black Metal act Naglfar and Ronnie Bjornstrom (Ribspreader, Hate Ammo, etc). So let's see what Kam had to say.
First Kam I would like to say it's a great pleasure to do this interview. I always admired your work when I first heard Massacre's "From Beyond".
When I first heard that classic piece I understand why Barney cite you as a influence. I know it must be great testament to you.
Thanks - it's always good to talk to an old school fan. And yeah - I guess guys like Mark "Barney" Greenway - NAPALM DEATH/BENEDICTION and Dave Ingram - BOLT THROWER/BENEDICTION and many others still cite me as an influence to their vocals. And to me that's always good to know that these guys will acknowledge me as an influence, and it's great to know that fans can find out these facts thru interviews and reviews from people with the knowledge of history of the death metal scene.
Tell me how Bone Gnawer came into being and who came up with the the idea to put this band together?
I was first introduced to Rogga Johanson thru a mutual friend at the time back in early 2008 - and together we where first to work on a project to be called REVOLTING, but things with that did not work out, and so Rogga went off to do REVOLTING with out my involvement. Yet Rogga still wanted to work together with me, and the same with me. So we talked about working together on a new band, and BONE GNAWER was created out of that.
With you living in Florida and the rest of the members living in Sweden how hard was it to put the material together for the album?
Not hard at all - with technology today - the internet and music programs to make things into WAVE and MP3 files... it was rather easy. Rogga would write all the music and arrangements of music - then send the MP3 files of tracks to me via e-mails - and I then would write the lyrics around the music. This is how I've always worked with all my bands - even before the internet... I let the musicians create the music - and then I will go in and work the lyrics and vocal arrangements around their music.
You recorded the vocals with Eric Rutan while the band recorded the music in Sweden right? Did that work out?
NO - I did not work with Eric Rutan or record at MANA studios for this. I worked with my good friend Rob Reider at FULL SAIL studios - he engineered my vocal session for this - as well he did the engineering for my vocals on the up coming album of THE GROTESQUERY. Also - I am partners with Rob in a film company AKAHON FILMS - and together we did a short zombie-comedy called "BETTIE DEADLY" and we will be doing more filming coming up the next year. And also Rob and I have a Horror Punk band called CRYPTIDZ that we do togther, and I will be recording a full length album for that in October.
Now - the other members of BONE GNAWER all recorded their work at ENHANCED AUDIO PRODUCTIONS STUDIO in Sweden, this is Ronnie Bjornstrom (our guitarist) studio - and he also did the great production and mastering of our album there. He also did the recent mastering and production for THE GROTESQUERY as well.
Whatever happen to your current Denial Fiend?
I quit that band because of musical differences and internal problems between myself and the other band members. We don't see 'eye to eye' on business matters and musical direction or how to agree on how to do things, and so I felt it best to just quit that band - rather then stay in something I felt I was being forced to compromise myself for.
When I first heard the song "Make You Die", I had think about renting that movie of same title my mom was watching with me and got grossed out! lol
That's good - gross outs - and gore are a part of explotation films from the 70's.
How do you rate the current horror flicks like Saw, High Tension, Ichi The Killer and the Hostel movies?
I luv horror films - and that means even the newer stuff. I know alot of closed minded people out there that only like the old cult horror flicks - just like the same kinds of people that only like old cult death metal and black metal bands. Yet, I do try to be open minded about both my horror and my music taste. I am NOT a fan of PG13 horror films - and re-makes of Asian Horror, but I do like a lot of "new" horror - esp. these new French horror films like: HIGH TENSION, INSIDE, and MARTYRS. Japanese stuff like: ICHI THE KILLER is just pure genious - but then again I like everthing that Takashi Miike does, even his non-horror films are some of my favorites. New films like HOSTEL and SAW movies aren't as bad as some shit that's out there. I have seen worse - all the teen shit like TWILIGHT and that kind of sissy vampire bullshit - is fucking pathetic! Yet - a great vampire film like LET THE RIGHT ONE IN - from Sweden or something like 30 DAYS OF NIGHT will get by passed for this gay vampire stuff.
So compaired to these types of sissy horror genre teeny vampire drama films - I would rather watch stuff like the SAW series any day.
Is Bone Gnawer a full time project
YES. The plan is to tour and perform "live" - but we need tour support - and it's hard to get. Even though we are signed to PULVERISED, they don't give us tour support. So it's hard for us to secure a tour, hopefully after the debut has been out for awhile - and getting good reviews - promoters will book us, but until we can establish a good name for ourselves - it's hard to try and see us doing any major touring any time soon. We will however keep making new records... we already have a split coming up with the band BONESAW from Scottland for HALLOWEEN time release. And we are already working on new material for the follow up to FEAST OF FLESH.
Have you heard any reactions to CD from the fans?
Everyone seems to really love our album... on the average - 8 out of 10 with most reviews, so I say that's pretty good for a debut album!
I like to thank you for your time anything you like to say to the gorefiends?
Thanx to all the cannibal mutant freaks out there for the support! I've been doing death metal now going on 25 years - and the BEST is still to come. Not only with BONE GNAWER - but I have THE GROTESQUERY - plus a few other new projects in the works, and I hope fans and friends will continue to support my efforts!
