Hellsongs - Lounge

review by Jesse A Lambertson exclusively for BRUTALISM.com

Hellsongs is a Swedish band from Gothenburg and claim to revel in lounge versions of classical metal tracks. Let’s not, however, assume they are correct in their claim. The music they play, though mellow, is certainly not lounge. The word “lounge” is defined by several elements but all of them are associated with sitting in plush chairs. There is a relaxing quality to the word and “lounge music” is certainly thought of as being a relaxing musical form, even sleep-inducing maybe.
Now, it is true that the album is relaxing as compared to the originals of Metallica’s “Seek & Destroy” or Iron Maiden’s “Run to the Hills,” (there are 6 tracks on the CD total) but that does not mean that Hellsongs’ CD is lounge music. I would compare it more to The Cardigans, certain moments in Sixpence None the Richer, and perhaps a little to Faith & The Muse. The darker sections I most appreciate in Lounge mirror the beauty in Faith & The Muse. The pop moments that remind me more of the other two bands are pleasant but do not grab me totally by the collar and shake.
I am glad for their sake the band has found some international acclaim in Europe and North and South America since their birth in 2004. The songs are solidly sung. Harriet Ohlsson, the singer turns these bold classical metal tracks, tracks that were all originally sung by males, into well formed cries from a feminine heart.
