Emptiness - Oblivion review by Adrian Dan exclusively for BRUTALISM.com The Belgian Emptiness (there must be at least 10 more Emptiness around) was created in 1998 and has between it's members some illustrous names in the Belgian metal scene meaning Nerath Daemon, former guitarist of the black metal legend Enthroned, and Phorgath nowadays bassist in the same band. But Emptiness si not straigth forward aggressive black metal and its lyrics are not about satanism and such; Emptiness is a mix of mostly mid-tempo melodic black with raw and brutal yet technical death metal with good immagination and clear sound (maybe the the sound on vocals could have been better). Although this is their second effort, Emtiness proves that its a mature band that can create complex yet rather direct tracks, a combination of melodic lines with razor-cutting brutal rhythm. There are even some keyboard backgrounds to push the atmosphere into more mystical soundscapes. Maybe on this one they concentrated more on the technical part than the aggressive one, so hope the next one will be more balanced. Both the fans of melodic yet aggressive black metal and those of brutal old-school death metal (American, a la Incantation) will have a taste of this. It's not perfect, but it's for sure very good and captivating. Emptiness |
