Interview with Wermen (Februari 2008)

So Wermen, long time no see and talk. For those who don't know you please give us a short introduction of yourself?
Name, Rikard Wermén, drummer in a Deranged. A death metal act from Sweden. Been around since the early nineties and have released a couple of CD’s and been touring all over Europe the last couple of years.

Anything nice too say about your fellow bandmates? Or maybe some nasty habets of them?
Nah, they are dull and boring.

Deranged was formed somewhere around 1991 and still active. What is the driving force to keep alive?
I ask myself the same very question every single say. Ha ha ha… Nah… I would say that we enjoy what we’re doing. That’s it. Simple as that.

How do you look back to the beginning? What were the goals then and ever though you would be slamming in 2008?
When we actually first started out our very goal was to write 4 songs and record a demo tape. We did that. After that, to get us self a 7” single deal. We got several deals like that but only two singles was actually released… I don’t know but one usually set up smaller goals all the time and you got to make sure to make them happen. To be totally honest, I didn’t think back in ´92 that Deranged would actually be still around today in 08 but we are.

Does Deranged has a mission to spread or is it just an artistic hobby? And if there is some kind of mission what is it? And if not what is the fun of playing in the band?
Since we’re not making any dough out of the band I would say that it is a hobby, right? Don’t know what kind of mission we would be on though… I enjoy being in the band. It’s good fun to be out on the road once you’re up on the stage it’ll say… Mean, I have been in bands since fucking ´87 or ´88… That’s what I’m doing. Ha ha ha…

Why did the three of you started with Murder Corporation in 1995? Need a sidepath to expand the creativity?
Murder Corporation started out as a project but soon developed into an actual band. Murder Corporation was compared to Deranged probably more straight forward, raw and with almost a punkish attitude I would say. We recorded and released several recordings. Some turned out nice. Some are pure crap.

And why did you wear those masks? Afraid that the Tax office would recon you and send you a big bill?
Ha ha ha… Unfortunately that wasn’t the case. Just a fun thing you know… I had never been in a band that had an especial image like Murder Corporation obviously had so that was something new for me. A fun thing to try out.

After some releases the band stopped in 2001. What was the reason for that? Out of ideas or just too busy with other things? Or was Killaman the reason? So what was the reason to step into Killaman? And is the band on hold or has it commited suicide?
Killaman is on ice as one say. We’re all pretty occupied with other things right now…  To be honest, the Murder Corp. sound drastically changed and we got us self a new singer and it just felt kind of weird to continue under the name Murder Corporation so we split that up and formed Killaman instead. But as said, that’s on ice for the moment.

The red line through Deranged are serial killers? Who is your favorit serialkiller and why?
I wouldn’t claim myself to be fanatic interested in serial killers… I don’t have a “favorite serial killer” either…

Why are normal people fascinated by serial killers? Did you ever read research articles on this to get into the mind of us normal people?
I don’t have a clue. My guess is that the human kind is just interested in the morbidity, murder and mayhem through nature.  It’s been so since day one hasn’t it? People enjoy seeing other people suffer… There’s a reason why reality shows are as big and popular as they are.

And did you do research on the mind of a serial killer? Or only get inspiration from movies?
I only get inspiration from movies and lately voices in my head so…

Seems that Johan is your partner in killing as you always appear together in the bands. I guess you know eachother before you started with Deranged. Is there some kind of bond between you?
Ha ha ha… Nah, no actual bond just how things have turned out and no, we didn’t know each other before he joined the band.

When being part of different bands don't you always have no free time and always fucking busy? What is the fun or running from one band to another?
Right now am I only doing Deranged and have only been doing Deranged the last few years. That’s the thing as you put it, hardly any free time if you have to deal with a few bands. Mean, there are so many things to take care off besides recording and touring. Merch got to be made, websites got to be updated, interviews like this one got to be answered etc. etc. But, it’s nice to have another band “on the side” as one says…  Just to do something different once in a while.

2008 Is the year of "The Redlight Murder Case". Why took it so long to come with something new as your latest is from 2005?
The Redlight… was first meant to be released in 07 but due to us being unable to collaborate everything when it came to the cover artwork and layout that never happened so it got delayed a few months but… Shit happens. I wouldn’t say that 2-3 years between one album and the other aren’t that long.

How would you describe the evolution from the brutal sound you had on "X-Rated" to more thrashy sound nowadays? Is this because you would rather play thrash like they did in the 80s?
So there’s a more thrashy sound nowadays? I don’t know… We’re not the kind of band that will have like band meetings where we discuss in what musical direction if any we’ll take the band. We just play and if it sounds cool, we’ll keep it. Simple as that. But never the less… Rated-X was released in ´95 so naturally you’ll hear some development, right?

And why did you jump to Regain Records? Because the contract with Listenable ended or because Per was your original vocalist?
Neither… It came to a point where Listenable wanted one thing and we another and things wasn’t working out. I still consider Listenable to be a cool label and all that though… Basically asked Regain if they wanted to give it a try and they hooked.

And please tell us, without shame ofcourse, why this is the best album released till today? And why we should buy it instead of downoading?
All of Deranged albums have always shown a musical progression and this is no exception. If you have been into Deranged earlier works you’ll fucking get into the new disc as well. It’s the best shit we have yet done under the name Deranged and why you should actually buy it instead of downloading? Because a CD is so much more then the actual music. You need to have the cover, the printing on the CD and besides that, we enjoy to sell a lot of CD so make us happy.

In the previous question I asked about buying or downloading. How do you look at the fact that a lot of people are downloading the albums? Do you think there will a solution to avoid this? Or is this a phenomonon in the spirit of this era?
There’ll never be a final solution to avoid downloading. People will always find new ways. Mean, naturally I would prefer if people bought our CD’s instead of downloading but what to do? It’s kinds hard to tell people go buy something they can get for free you know… I’m no hypocrite… I download pretty much any CD I want to check out and have the last couple of years never earlier in my life discovered so many new fucking killer bands. That’s the good thing of downloading, to discover new bands… The very negative side is obviously killing the industry but… That’s been said a million of times before. People are aware of that.

Are you still a collector of vinyls as you told me some years ago? What is so special with vinyl releases? Ever thought of releasing Deranged material only on vinyl?
To be honest, I have most of the records I want right now but I’m still a fan of vinyl right. The format is just so much nicer and basically funnier. That would have been an economical disaster to just release Deranged material on vinyl nowadays but… To release music on CD can be an economical disaster as well nowadays so…

I saw you are playing a lot of shows and festivals this year. Any change that you play "Black Semen Vengeance"?
Nah… Hasn’t done that song live since ´96 or so…

Are you preparing 1 set list or do you play different lists on the festivals? Ever thought of letting fans vote for their favorit songs and so compile a set list?
We usually try different songs live once in a while live. Through in 1 or 2 songs we haven´t never done live you know but… The thing is, some songs are better in a studio situation rather than a live one and vice versa.

Is there much interaction with the fans? I ask this because the official site and Myspace are not being active with news and updates? Can fans apporach you after a show or do they have to buy you a beer first?
Well, I update our My Space whenever there’s something to update it with, being a tour date or whatever so there is indeed a continual updating on that one.

Is there any country you won't tour because they have beer that taste like horsepiss?
No…

So is there anything you think that has to be said before ending this intie?
You pretty much covered everything.  It was a nice interview.

Last rites?
Thanx for the interview. Be sure to check the new CD and death to posers.
