Hailing from the land of "The Rising Sun" Tokyo's DEFILED was birthed in 1992. Being based in such a big crazy city, the DEFILED sound is a product of their surroundings. Technical, brutal and precise the band manages to stay unique in a genre that is typically dominated by the western world.
The earth witnessed the release of two demos in the early 90s and one self financed mini CD titled "Defeat of Sanity" in 94. This paved the way for the band's multiple live shows that can only be described as "devastating"!
These have included opening slots for the likes of CANNIBAL CORPSE in their homeland of Japan in 96, and on frequent international tours. In 98, the band toured the states with genre legends INCANTATION and in Japan with TESTAMENT, MORBID ANGEL, VADER and ARCH ENEMY. These tours brought DEFILED a lot of intense publicity for sure.

1999 saw the release of the bands first full length recording "Erupted Wrath" on U.S. based Nightfall/Terrorizer Records. Recorded by Brian Griffin (ex-BROKEN HOPE, EM SYMPHONIA) at Quali-Tone Studios in Chicago and mixed by non other than Genre Legend Jim Morris at Morrisound Studio in Tampa Florida.

The same year saw Japan's first band ever to play North America's Milwaukee Metalfest and New Jersey Metal Meltdown, which they have played now for four consecutive years! In 2000, toured Europe for three weeks with DEMENTOR which brought them to many lands including Malaysia, Canada and Korea, all of which garnered the band the same critical acclaim!

In 2001, released the full length "Ugliness Revealed". Once again mixed by Tom Morris at Morrisound the record saw release via the U.S. based Baphomet Records through Necropolis. The record had great responses from all over the world, and even future established the bands reputation for quality, yet chaotic music.

In 2002, Season of Mist joins forces with the band and records the third album "Divination", once again mixed by genre legend Jim Morris. Which will be unleashed on the world May 12th 2003! Get ready for the severe Brutal Death Metal attack from the East!! For the sun is no longer the brightest thing to arise from the Eastern lands, and shall forever scorch the earth!

DEFILED is Hideki Fujimoto-Vocals, Yusuke Sumita-Guitars, Norihisa Fukuda-Bass and Yuichi Ishiguro-Drums.

interview with Hideki on 01-10-2003

Please give us a short introduction of youself?
Okay, I'm Hideki the singer from DEFILED, a band from Tokyo, Japan. We play music so called Brutal Death Metal but I don't think ours is in ordinary way at all. We avoid getting influenced from any of other bands intentionally because we're always trying to be one and only. So called, original.

What is your personal reason to sing in the band?
Because I like everything in this band!

Did your famil committed harakiri after hearing your musical preference?
My parents are big fan of the band... Yes, it's true! They always listen to our CD and are saying it's cool...!

Did you ever tried to play an instrument? Why only vocals?
I fully devote myself to the song and can never afford to do anything else when I sing a song! Moreover, I can't play as well as the rest guys of the band. Each members are absorbed in each parts in this band. Very harmonious, I think.

Do you play airguitar on stage? Only with the leads or also riffing?
No, I just sweep a floor with spinning of my four feet long hair, you know.

Started in 1992. What are the most remarkable years and why?
We played with many bands in '98 for example INCANTATION, VADER, MORBID ANGEL etc and that was a great year. But most fine one is this year 'cause we could release an album that we're fully satisfied with!

How did Defiled developed through the years? Expected what you reached til now?
We learned many things from the process of everything and want to thank everyone we ever met. We've met many great bands and people on the road and they taught us what we should do or should not do...

Is there any goal you wanna reach with the band? What are the plans to achieve this?
I wanna play in as many cities as possible. We've played in 13 or 14 countries ever but as you know we have another 230 countries left on this planet! I know some countries prohibit this kind of music, but I hope some day we can achieve this plan.

Are there many brutal bands in Japan? What metal scene is the most populair?
The scene for domestic bands is quite small here now, unfortunately. Many fans listen only to foreign bands and have complicated prejudice against home bands. Almost all of them will never be interested in domestic bands until they are accepted in foreign countries or win the highest prize on the magazines... So stupid. But, I heard some good new bands including who play brutal one were born recently and the scene will be magnified sooner or later, I hope.

Did you follow the bands like Loudness, Bow Wow? Do you know what they are doing these days?
They still are doing their music but I don't know well, sorry. I was a big fan of early Loudness but honestly lost my interest when they once changed their sound drastically.

Having difficulties of acceptance by the overseas metalfans? Some negative or positive experiences?
It's easier than being accepted by the conservative 'foreign music fans' in Japan, I think.

How do ordinairy people look towards metalheads in Japan? Does it fit in the Japanese culture?
Does not fit at all. It's hard to find a job if we have long hair here and have many other difficulties too here. But we don't care. This is what we wanna do and we're ready to walk the way conversely.

Ever tried to perform in a traditional Kimono?
I like Kimono actually and often wear in my home but never tried to do on the stage. I guess no Dutch bands decorate the stage with tulip flowers too, right?! (nope, but with other green plants, haha, Twan)

Is the government accepting metal or trying to abandon it?
They may think nothing of metal. We're a minority here fortunately or unfortunately.

Of what bands are you fan yourself? Maybe some non metal bands?
Yes, we all love to listen to other kinds of music. Norihisa and Yuichi had formal musical education at a music school and very much into Fusion Jazz like Victor Wooten or Omar Hakim. Yusuke loves Classic music of its most avant-garde way like George Garshwin or Igor Stravinski. I listen to anything from Folk music to Harsh Noise. I think you can find some of these elements on our songs.

Does the BigMac taste the same in Tokyo as in Eindhoven?
Yes BigMac is the same but we have our own one called Kamikaze Burger and it's a killer! You should try when you come here though I don't know if you can find the shop or not.

I practice Muy Thai myself and love to watch fights. Why is K1 so populair? Can't image that here in Europe complete families attending the fight.
Great to know you are a Muy Thai fighter! I really respect great Dutch fighters like Aearts and Hoost! I love Chakuriki fighters and someday I wanna visit that gym. Yuichi and I are very much into fighting moreover Yusuke is a Kendo fighter. I go to watch fights almost every month! A few weeks ago I went to the 10th anniversary event of Pancrase and it was awesome. Why is K1 so popular? Maybe because it's not fake but real!!

What is your fighting spirit? How do you keep sharp?
At least I'm always trying to be servile. No obsequious fighters can survive the severe road, I really think.

Do you have something to say about the last record? Think of something to promte it.
First, we're very proud of this new Divination album. It's definitely the best album we've ever made and want many metalfans to listen to it. I promise you will never be disappointed if you like brutal or bizarre music.

Having plans to invade Europe? On what fest or where do you have to play? How can they book you and are you playing for only free beer?
Now Season of Mist and DEFILED are trying to book a good European tour and hope we can announce a good news to you soon! Anyone who is interested in this long haired Japanese bastards, feel free to send us email. We really wanna go there to Europe again! It was over three years ago when we toured there with Slovakia's DEMENTOR for two weeks...

Something to spit on the people who read this intie?
Readers, listen to Divination album as soon as possible! And let us hear what you think about it. Visit our web site and be updated!

Last rites?
Thank you Twan for this interview! Stay brutal and support the Death Metal Underground Forever!!
