Just barely a year after their debut release of their debut effort 'Inundate,' Swedish Death Metal powerhouse Sectu take listeners by storm again with their furious sophomore effort of 'Gerra.' Just as before, track after track, the group is unrelenting with their churning guitars and brutal vocal assault that will appease listeners of groups like mid era Behemoth or even Deeds Of Flesh. On the downside, just like before, the straightforward approach track after track with just a hailstorm of drum bursts, bellowing vocals, and guitars that can one moment be performing melodic solos and then just like the drums sound like gunfire, can get somewhat boring after a while. Here and there things pick up with some variety, such as the slow, grinding "Court Of The Sloths" which live up to the namesake, or the more groove oriented "Divest," but on the overall front 'Gerra' sticks to its previous roots pretty closely.
Sadly Sectu did not choose to include an instrumental on this album. There is the opening fire crackle of "Gerra," but it is far too brief or ambient to be considered an instrumental display of power. One could say that the closing "All Engorging Furnace" is more instrumental than actual song due to the limited use of the vocals, but it sticks in the same boat as the other tracks by keeping a driving rhythm focused without little diversion from the path. Sure there is more melody involved near the end with a more 'Death n' Roll' approach, but overall the brutal tone doesn't draw it too much attention when lined up with a track like "Havoc" which pretty much follows the same formula. Overall, the music here is solid and furious, but difficult to separate Sectu from so many other artists who follows a path similar to theirs.
