Extreme necro black metal band Morbifer formed in 2006 and in 2009 put out their debut. With only two members in the band (with session drummers in between), they perform a raw, twisted music with a fascination on vampires and other evil things that go bump in the night. The production on the album is very raw and static laden, creating that cold, evil atmopshere that black metal usually includes. By focusing on buzzing guitars and eerie synths along with gutteral, snarled vocals, it is clear that darkness is what embraces this band.

All the songs and lyrics are in Polish, so there may be a language barrier. Those who enjoy low-fi, suicidal black metal in the vein of Xasthur or Dodsferd will probably enjoy this. Most of the tracks such as "Krol W Czerni" are dark, grim tracks that are composed of distorted guitar chords, snarls, and hyper drumming along with the moaning synth in the background. It's the standard black metal formula for the album so don't expect a lot of variation or monotony. The vocals are done in a dark, gutteral rasp that add a little more experimental quality than the average shriek, but they can get old after a while. The only track that really sounds different from any of the others is the acoustic "Morbiferonomicon" which is oddly the most dark and atmospheric track of all, setting off a sense of mysticism that none of the other tracks really achieve. It may not be 'black metal' mystical, but it adds the vampyric themes.

A lot of Morbifer's work is dark and raw, with plenty of guitar set on overdrive, but they keep the synth at a reasonable level without going overboard like some black metal bands do. There's just enough there to add the right levels of atmosphere for the music without becoming symphonic. The music itself isn't original, but it's worth checking out for anyone who likes necro style black metal or depressive black metal in general. For fans mostly of bands like Locus Mortis, Trancelike Void, and Lantlos.
