Since its inception in january '92, AVULSED has always been synonym of Death Metal. The band has been developing its musical style through various demos until they recorded their debut album ("Eminence In Putrescence"-'96) where the band showed its pure Death Metal sound mixing up both heavy & brutal riffs with melodic parts.

However, the band continued working on new material for their long awaited 2nd album ("Stabwound Orgasm"-'99). For this work, AVULSED opted to record at Spacelab Studios located in Kempen (Germany) to secure a first-class production avoiding to sound like any other bands (just like it happens in Sweden) and sent the master to James Murphy in California to do the mastering at his own Sound Temple Studios in San Francisco.

With a big legion of fans all over the world, created during nearly 10 years, the band feels stronger than ever and after the big succes of their previous work "Stabwound Orgasm", now with their brand new album "Yearning For The Grotesque", AVULSED is ready to become one of the leading bands of its genre. Such musical quality can't pass indifferent for any true Death Metal fan in planet earth!!

interview with Dave on 24- 04-2003

Please give us a short introduction of yourself?
I'm Dave Rotten, vocalist, spanish super-male, owner of Xtreem Music (ex-Repulse Rec.).

The most important question: how much does your dick weight?
Mmm... I see you're very interested, eh?? You had the chance to check it out last summer 2002 when we played two shows in Holland, but you weren't able to come and you missed it...

So after all these years you are on the BRUTALISM site. How does it feel? And how long does it last?
Nothing special... knowing the owner of this site, I'd say nothing special, ha, ha!! Now seriously, it's great to be on a friend's site who's been supporting us for many years now!!

Why did you choose Rotten as last name? Taken from where of what? What is you real last name?
I choosed this back in '88 when I did a fictitious band together with some friends. We all chosed nick-names, and since I was pretty much into D.R.I. back then, I used the Dave Rotten [the Imbecile] as my nick.. after so many years, I don't know why I didn't add the "imbecile" third name, because I'm definitely a huge imbecile, ha, ha!! Also my farts smell like I'm rotten, so perhaps that has a connection, uh!!

What do you think of all those Black Metal guyz with their nicknames? And what about the corpsepaint?
I don't give a fuck, you know... they can do whatever they want!! I think nick-names are fine always that it's original... when it's the typical one taken from a book, it sounds stupid, you know... but for example, in my case, there's many David S‡nchez in Spain, but I can assure you there's only one Dave Rotten, and actually everybody knows me by this nick-name, which is more pupular than my real name, ha, ha!! Corpsepaint...?? Well, I don't care either... some Black Metal bands use a very ridiculous corpsepaint, but others look OK...

How did you get involved in Metal music? Remember the first bands? Still follow them? What are your today highlights?
I remember a friend of mine in the school introduced me to bands like W.A.S.P., TWISTED SISTER, ACCEPT, IRON MAIDEN, JUDAS PRIEST... so they were the first Metal bands I've ever heard. I mainly follow W.A.S.P., which is my absolutely fave, but I also love JUDAS PRIEST and ACCEPT!! Today... there's no Heavy Metal bands I really like... I'm not into that anymore, so I just like to listen my old classics when I want to hear something genuine. Today's Heavy Metal scene is pretty weak...

You are also known from Repulse Recs. Was it your idea to start a label or just happened? Did you had some business advisor or everything DIY? What good and bad things did you learn of those years?
Well, before Repulse I was known because of Drowned Prod., which I started back in 1990. I didn't have any advisor, I just followed my instincts, and perhaps the worst thing I've ever done was to get partners with me. Now with Xtreem Music I don't have any partner, I'm the only boss and so far it's going pretty well. The best thing was all the released I did put through the years!! I believe I've released many masterpieces both in Dornwed & Repulse.

What are Golgotha, Reincarnation or Uncreation doing these days? Still in contact with them?
They don't exist anymore!! They all dissappeared like in '98/'99 and new bands have been arising since then. I'm still in touch with some of the GOLGOTHA guys, spceially with Vicente, one of my best friends ever!!

Learn me some spanish words that will make my wife horny as hell.
Puta, esta noche te voy a meter my polla por tu co–o jugoso y te va a salir por la boca!! Luego harŽ el proceso inverso y por supuesto te tragar‡s todo mi semen caliente hasta la œltima gota!!

Think you will make the same mistakes with Xtreem Music? What differs Xtreem from Repulse?
No, I hope not, ha, ha!! I'm trying to make things quite differently from Repulse. The main thing is that the dedication is more intense and everything's more focused to the internet side. The policy regarding the bands i'm signing, don't differ from the Repulse days, I just sign the bands I personally like, with preference for Death Metal, of course!! There are many other different things, but they belong to "professional secret", ha, ha!!

What have bands got to do to get a release on Xtreem Music? What are important points for you to sign a band?
As I told you, I must like them and I must see some potential in their music. I don't want to release an average band. I try not to release two bands of the same style, I mean, there are many different kinds of Death Metal, and you can see it on my releases... They have to be there in the right time... sometimes there are bands that I like, but unfortunately I can't sign them all...

Was it easy to get a deal for Avulsed? Why did you decide to go with Avantgarde? Why not on Xtreem Music?
Yes, was quite easy, in fact we didn't have to ask them, they just asked us and the rest was easy. The reason why we left Repulse was because of the band financial situation of the label, and back then, Xtreem Music didn't exist, so it was not an option...

The new album has a nice artwork. Bjoern did a good job, only the booklet was not assembled in right way. Did you came up with the ideas? Think it is difficult to have artwork seperated from the mass?

Well, it was a fault from the label... they didn't notice they had to put all pages in the right order... but well... I think Bjšrn did an excellent job. The ideas came up between he and me. We were develiping the whole concept during three months. In the end, I think the result is really impressive!! Not your typical meaningless artwork...

What are you fav album covers? Do you prefer them on CD or vinyl seize?
I don't know... perhaps the first PYREXIA album cover was great, too bad that it came out with a very bad quality, but I saw the original and it was great!! Also some of Dan Seagrave's early covers were great. Some of the BOLT THROWER cover too!! Of course the vinyl size is the best for a cover!!

You collect vinyls. Why? What are your fav vinyls?
Yes, but only cult vinyls. I don't collect Death Metal vinyls, only odl cult Thrash & Hardcore stuff. For Death, Grind or Black, I prefer CD's. I also have a great 7"EP collection!! My fave vinyls are the most reare ones!! Also the countless W.A.S.P. vinyls!! They're the best!! I don't know why they don't do vinyls anymore...

How long did it take to get the special make up on for the picshoot? Did you remove it right after the session or went to the pub with it?
Ha, ha, ha!! It wasn't make-up!! It was all made with a computer!! We just took some pictures at our rehearsal place, then sent them to Bjšrn by e-mail and he did the rest!! Great, isn't it?? No, we're not that kind of clones who paint themselves... we just did it for fun, because we thought it would fit better with the rest of the CD design!!

Are you a football supporter? Which team and how fanatic are you? Visit games, wear merchandise? Think the clubs pay too much for the players? Ever waved with a white handkerchief?
Yes, I'm a follower of Real Madrid, which by the way, few minutes ago left back the mighty Manchester United, ha, ha!! We'll se if we reach the finals... will be difficult, of course... I'm not that fanatic, I just like it and I feel happy when R.M. wins, but if they lose, fuck them, you know!! I don't use to visit games or wear merchandise, it's too expensive... I prefer to see football at home... I think the player earn too much money and that destroys football, but... that's how it is... sorry, I don't know what the fuck do you mean with the last question...

Do you practice sports yourself? What do you do to keep in shape? Special training to reach more air for the singing?
No, I don't practice any sports since 10 years or so... I don't have the time, but I was a pretty good football player. Now the only thing I play are bed-sports, ha, ha!!

Who are you vocal inspirations? What makes you a good death grunter? Ever tried to sing other styles? What about the Halford screams?
My vocal inspirations comes from the late '80's and early 90's cult bands like GOREFEST, GRAVE, PYREXIA, GOD MACABRE, FUNEBRE, CREMATORY (swe), ROTTREVORE, DEMIGOD... I don't know if I'm a good Death grunter, that's something other's should say... but I try to sing and not just grunting. Actually, even if I sing so deep and low, you can see I'm pronouncing the lyrics, but only if you read them along, ha, ha!! I also do some aggressive singing every now and then. I could well sing with shrieky vocals, it's just a matter of practising, nothing really special. As for gay screamings... we''ll, never tried, I wouldn't like to sing that way...

What is your fav transportation: car, bike, motorcycle or skateboard? How does your own vehicle looks like?
Car, of course, although I'm not afanatic of cars... I have a Renault Kangoo, because I like a car to be useful for me, not the opposite, you know... I really like this car!! I always use it when AVULSED has to play anywhere in Spain!! Sometimes outside!

Do you think you will visit Holland again for some shows or for vacation?
Who knows!! Last time I visited Holland for vacations (with my car, ha, ha) was in January 2001 and for shows, it was August 2002, so let's see when's the next time. I must say Holland is perhaps my favourite country after Spain, of ocurse!!

Besides the stupid windmills and the wooden shoes, what images do you get when you hear about Holland?
I always think about Amsterdam... that's what comes to my mind. I think it's a cool country.

If I come to your hometown do you have a sleeping place for me?
Yes, of course!! All my friends are always welcome. The bad thing is that not many of them use to come to Spain. Seems like it's too far from central Europe, but I can tell you that Spain is the best country for holidays!!

So at the end do wish to say something to me or the readers? Notice that I don't pay any censorship!
Thanx for the interview (typical sentence you know...) and thanx for al those you did read this interview until the end... it means you're really interested in AVULSED and the stupidities that his infamous vocalist has to say to the absurd questions of this webshite's editors, ha, ha!! Check out our new album "Yearning For The Grotesque" and visit www.avulsed.com if you want to see one of the best and most complete band's website ever!!

Last rites?
Fuck you Twan!!
